Figure out what cats are saying

MeowTalk is a free lifestyle mobile app that lets you record and study cat meows. Developed by Akvelon, this app pretty much allows you to understand cats a little bit better by giving them text-based human phrases. With machine learning, it can translate for your feline friend—however, you can also train it to recognize a specific meow you’re really familiar with.

When cats meow

It can be hard to understanding cats’ meows if you’re not yet familiar with them—doubly so when they don’t show body language while meowing. Fortunately, you can try and use MeowTalk for this. The app offers nine basic feline intentions like hunger and happiness and then translate those into sentences like “I’m hungry” and “I’m happy.” However, each cat is unique and may meow a bit differently compared to other cats.

For this, you can teach the app to learn a meow whenever you record one. Simply do so and type in a custom phrase that your cat may be saying. You will have to do this 5 - 10 times so it can start recognizing the meow. However, it’s recommended that you teach the app only when you’re absolutely certain that that’s what your cat’s meow means.

It might take the app 24 hours to even process your recordings. Unfortunately, you can actually get inaccurate translations, especially when you check their body language whenever they meow. Moreover, you can’t edit past recordings and any inputs you did. The app’s concept is nice but still needs a lot of work into its AI to deliver the best results for most cats.

Hear what they say

All in all, MeowTalk is a pretty nice app to try out if your hobby involves cats. Whether you’re an owner yourself or just a fan of cats in general, there’s no harm in testing it and training it to recognize cat sounds. However, remember that it’s not a fully polished product and won’t always give accurate answers for the meows you want to be translated. It’s enough that you can have fun with it and the cats.
